Marshall McLuhan’s quote now made famous by a Canadian Heritage moment is a perfect illustration of how marketing in 2008 is drastically different than at any other point in our history. The interconnected and online community is the latest change of venue for captive audiences.
Once these massive groups of people could be found in the church hall for meetings and town squares for proclamations. The invention of frequency manipulation and the evolution of the radio moved people from the churches and squares to living rooms around the world, of course later the radio gave way to the television and that has been the mainstay for thirty or forty years.
The advertising and marketing though varied throughout time has been for the most part static in its existence and design. Today, the internet is changing the entire game, now more than ever the medium is the message and the people, the audience, they are controlling and creating the content.
